A short sequence of photographs taken by Alessandr A short sequence of photographs taken by Alessandro Sigmondi in Turin, Italy, a few weeks ago x

I have been reflecting a lot on vairagya (detachment), catalysed by pain, injury and illness (in myself and those close to me). One of my favourite metaphors for this yogic principle is holding a beautiful flower. If we hold the flower lightly we can truly appreciate its radiance and bask in its light. If we squeeze the flower forcefully, frightened we will lose it, we crush its petals, pierce our skin with its thorns and destroy its flower-ness. We also prevent our hands (and hearts) from remaining open to receive other gifts life has to offer us.

I recently heard a talk by philosopher Alan Watts who used the analogy of water:

"Trying to hold on to life is like trying to hold water in your hands.
The harder you squeeze, the faster it runs through your fingers.
But if you relax and cup your hands gently, you can hold it for a while."

Life, our practice, our body, and our relationships are like water: fluid, transient and in a perpetual state of motion. If we cling to them too tightly they will flow through our fingers more quickly. They are precious jewels so often overlooked, under appreciated and taken for granted.

Just as we can never step into the same river twice, it is impossible to enter into the selfsame posture again. Asana is a pertinent example of impermanence and when we truly grasp this, it invites us to savour its fleeting nature (and that of the universe) and deeply appreciate the glimmers and miracles within it 🙏💜🧘‍♀️🕉️💦🦋 x

Tiktoks and the paradox of time in yoga x Tiktoks Tiktoks and the paradox of time in yoga x

Tiktoks illustrate the paradoxical nature of time: the profound and poetic tension between chronological time and the experiential timelessness of true yoga.

This moving asana portrays the “tick tock” of the clock: linear measured, pressure based time. It is the domain of the mind, planning, scheduling, controlling, progressing toward deadlines. It symbolizes external reality, often tied to 'doing', stress, urgency and aging. "Tick-tock" is the sound of time slipping away — moment by moment, hour by hour. It is a reminder of our mortality.

Yet, the actual execution of this asana demands playful animated presence. It is a portal into timeless essence, into the state of yoga. In such moments, the past and future fall away, and connection and flow ensue. Yoga is the domain of consciousness, inner stillness, and spiritual experience. It symbolises internal reality, where 'being', peace and eternity reside.

The paradox resides in using a structured time-bound practice, to touch the indestructible, unchanging, stillness at the core of all movement. Yogic practices performed in time, awaken timeless awareness. Formlessness is found in form. Freedom and flow are unveiled within the ordered discipline. This occurs within time yet illuminates the true Self unbound by temporal reality.

In much the same way the inhalation and exhalation flow rhythmically like the sound of a ticking clock. But, in following the breath deeply, and becoming absorbed and at one with it, it becomes a vehicle of now-ness, where time ceases to exist, the sense of 'I, me and mine' dissipates, and there is no longer any separation.

💜🙏🧘‍♀️🕉️🪷🤸⏳⌚x

Raja Kapotasana x This is perhaps my favourite ph Raja Kapotasana x

This is perhaps my favourite photograph captured by @sigis.mondi next to the river in Turin, Italy. I love its painterly quality, the contrast between the light and dark, the contours of the skin and the liquid surface of the river. It reminds me of chiaroscuro and life drawing, the water element within and around the body and the power of flow.

Water invariably makes me think of Bruce Lee also:

“Flow in the living moment. — We are always in a process of becoming and nothing is fixed. Have no rigid system in you, and you’ll be flexible to change with the ever changing. Open yourself and flow, my friend. Flow in the total openness of the living moment. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Moving, be like water. Still, be like a mirror. Respond like an echo.”

Flow like water, my friend x

Vrischikasana (scorpion pose) and scorpion compass Vrischikasana (scorpion pose) and scorpion compassion x

When I contemplated what words to use in the video with Alessandro, the theme of compassion surfaced strongly. Karuna is considered one of four keys in Patanjali's yoga sutra 1.33, and one of the four Immeasurables or aspects of unconditional love in Buddhist thought.

There is a phrase "scorpion 🦂 compassion" which refers to extending loving kindness and compassion even to those who have caused harm or difficulty, akin to the sting of a scorpion. It is inspired by parables which emphasise the importance of remaining compassionate irrespective of the behaviour of others. A well known story is of a sage who assists a scorpion out of the water, even though the scorpion stings them. The nature of the sage is to be compassionate so they continue to help even after being stung. In contrast, to sting is the nature of the scorpion 🦂. In this context, the scorpion is symbolic of someone who is being hurtful, malicious or difficult. And, that showing true compassion, amidst adversity and himsa, recognises the divine essence of all beings and may inspire positive change in others.

The poetic verse in the video references the sting:

The world outside, a canvas dark and vast,
Where shadows lurk and fleeting moments pass.
The yogi sees the struggle, feels the sting,
And offers solace, like a healing spring.
Not perfect actions, but a tender heart,
A gentle touch, a brand new, peaceful start.

May we refrain from stinging ourselves, each other or the Earth and cultivate true scorpion compassion instead x 🦂💜🙏🤸

Eka pada kapotasana & wishing you a beautiful Inte Eka pada kapotasana & wishing you a beautiful International Self-Compassion Day x

Over the last couple of years I have been actively trying to cultivate much more mindful self-compassion (MSC) inspired by @mindfullivingcommunityuk MSC is so useful in creating a much more kind, loving and uplifting inner atmosphere and in skilfully navigating suffering, injury and pain. For those of us with very strong inner critics it can be so challenging to keep our hearts open to ourselves, and to extend the same love and care we would to someone else we value. But, as Jack Kornfield writes 'if your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.' Kristin Neff teaches three aspects of self-compassion, namely mindfulness, common humanity and loving kindness. It is the perfect antidote to shame and its inherent rumination, isolation and self-criticism too.

As today is International Self-compassion Day I would love to share some quotes with you. I hope they resonate and inspire you to see yourself through more compassionate eyes:

“You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection” Buddha
“Self-compassion is a more effective motivator than self criticism because it is driven by love, not fear” Kristin Neff
“A moment of self-compassion can change your entire day. A string of such moments can change the course of your life.” Chris Germer
“To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.” Thích Nhất Hạnh
“Self-compassion is key because when we're able to be gentle with ourselves in the midst of shame, we're more likely to reach out, connect, and experience empathy” Brené Brown
“I love myself. The quietest. Simplest. Most powerful. Revolution. Ever.” Nayyirah Waheed
“It’s not your job to like me; it’s mine.” Byron Katie
“The moment you accept yourself, you become beautiful.” Osho
“Self-care is how you take your power back.” Lalah Delia
“Healing begins with acceptance and compassion for oneself.” Unknown
“Self-respect, self-worth, and self-love, all start with self. Stop looking outside of yourself for your value.” Rob Liano
“Self-compassion is your inner sanctuary.” Unknow

Recently I have been drawing so much inspiration from Jeff Foster @jefffosterofficial and his spiritual teachings. I find them to be a beautiful complement to the practice of ashtanga and in instilling more balance in my life. This is one of my favourite passages from his book 'The way of rest: finding courage to hold everything in love' p.203. I read it when teaching a yin class a few weeks ago and wanted to share it here too. I hope it speaks to your heart, as it does mine 💜🙏😚🕉️🧘‍♀️x

Love Song to Myself

You are the one I wake with every morning.
The one I breathe with, the one whose every heartbeat I feel as my own.
You are the one I walk with, the one I speak and sing with, the one who stays with me through every waking moment of every sacred day.
You are the one I get sick with, the one I cry with, the one whose anger and joy and doubt surges through me like fire.
You are the one I will die with, the one whose arms I return to.
You are the one I see in every face, shining through every pair of eyes, shimmering through the silences, the trails of dust and the spaces in the canopy.
You are my constant companion, my home, my reason, my joy, my life.
We cannot be divided, we cannot be two, and even One is too many for us.

I sing this song to myself, disappearing into the song, and I am never alone.

Bhujapidasana x A heart felt thank you for watchi Bhujapidasana x

A heart felt thank you for watching this video and reading this post 💜 I have had a long hiatus from posting on social media. The last asana I posted on this account was on the 1st of July 2023 so it is long overdue!

Since May 2023 I have been slowly recovering from shoulder/bicep tendon injuries. There is still a long way to go before I can resume my full practice but I am so grateful to be feeling the love for my practice again and to be able to keep doing what I can.

For over seven months I could not do chaturanga dandasana or put my hands above my head
....even downward dog was contraindicated for a time. I'm able to do primary and up to tittibhasana in intermediate now, although I cannot lift and jump back properly yet. I have learnt so much in this very challenging process. I hope to share some of those insights with you in due course....

If any of you are injured, ill or struggling with your practice in any way, do know you are not alone. Do reach out. I would love to hear from you and support you as best I can. The body-body-heart has a phenomenal inbuilt capacity to heal when given the right conditions and time frame to do so. Never lose hope. Nothing is wasted or lost. Every practice matters and has mattered. Yoga is for life or lifetimes depending on your perspective. And the body remembers. The physical aspect changes form but the internal aspects, process and state of yoga remain constant, to come home to true essence, peace and equanimity.

I would love to leave you with a beautiful Rumi quote I heard today, during an inspiring talk about hope by Tara Brach:

"Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are a hundred ways to kneel and kiss the ground" -Rumi

Eka pada rajakapotasana x This morning I listened Eka pada rajakapotasana x

This morning I listened to a dharma talk by Thich Nhat Hanh and wanted to share a little extract with you:

"Be beautiful. Be yourself... accept what we are. A lotus is beautiful as a lotus. She does not need to become a rose in order to be beautiful.... everything that we see manifests the wonders of God, of the ultimate reality....(worthy of) the deepest kind of respect .."

And here are a few notes from another dharma talk by Brother Phap Hai which followed:

"Being beautiful and being ourselves is such an important practice.... To be absolutely authentic and embrace all parts of ourselves is exceptionally challenging and can take a great deal of courage.... Do not settle for what others tell you. Do not settle for what you tell yourself.... To publicly be yourself and to be beautiful is to be absolutely ourselves in every circumstance..... We need to be aware of others who define ourselves to ourselves. Reclaim the right to define ourselves over and over as we transform, grow and evolve..... An authentic practitioner works to befriend all things, even and especially those which may be associated with shame..... Insight does not fall from the sky. It manifests from the heart of our pain.... Reflect on and celebrate your good qualities....rather than being broken, we are beautiful even if we may be in pieces."

Tiring Mukha Uttanasana….Catching x "Sometimes Tiring Mukha Uttanasana....Catching x

"Sometimes we need to let go of someone else catching us, to learn how to catch ourselves"

Over the last couple of weeks I have just begun to be able to catch myself from the air in backbends. It takes me numerous attempts to be able to catch my leg. I have to really swing my arms very strongly (not yet able to more gently reach the leg) and walking up is slow. But, this is such a breakthrough I've worked years for 💜 and the next step I can build up from.

When I first learnt to drop back I could not come back up at all. I taught myself to rise up using decreasing heights of furniture I'd drop back onto during home practice....after being able to come up, I steadily worked to close the space between my hands and feet. The bigger the distance the harder it is to rise. This process continued, not over days, weeks, but several years....I then started to be able to catch myself from the floor, but to do it from the air without assistance remained elusive.....Thousands of daily drop backs later it happened 💜

I am in awe of this methodology and the power of this practice. It really does work. As Patanjali outlined in yoga sutra 1.14:

Sa tu dirgha kala nairantarya satkarasevito drdhabhumih

Practice becomes a rooted, stable and solid foundation when done regularly without interruption, over the long term, with enthusiasm, respect and love.

Do not underestimate the small incremental, millimetre by millimetre, bits of progress over an extended period of time. They add up.....💜🙏🧘‍♀️🕉️x

“I wanted to get sober on my own. I didn’t want to ask for help. I didn’t want to “need” a program or anyone else to hold me accountable. My drinking consisted of a whole lot of shame and isolation. I generally maintained appearances, but I rarely ever let anyone see how bad I was actually feeling.

I saw myself as a helper, and for a long time I refused to put myself in the more vulnerable position of being the one who needed help. I didn’t even realize just how much I was perpetuating my own loneliness.

@trinifoundation connected me with a community of inspiring and supportive women who taught me that it is more than okay to reach out for help, no matter who you are or where you are on your journey.
It’s human to need support and connection with others.

I am honored to be working with the Trini Recovery Residence and to be a part of their mission to provide women with the opportunities, support, and resources to live a life in recovery.”

“I got sober in 2006, when I was 19. In my early recovery, I did not have the financial means to easily support myself. Being able to separate yourself physically, locationally, from one’s prior life in addiction can be a crucial step for a woman newly in recovery.

“Little me wouldn’t have been able to believe that some day I’d have the strength to hold myself up like this, physically or emotionally. When you have a parent struggling with substance use disorder, everything around you feels wobbly, uncertain, unpredictable, and you don’t have any control over all the turbulence. As a child, watching someone you love suffering, wears down your little heart, depletes your trust, & takes a toll on what you believe about your own worth in the world. I still have more strength to build and lessons to weave together, but I know now that my value doesn’t waiver based on my performance, or on someone else’s good and bad days. Neither does yours.

Today, as the owner of Philadelphia Ashtanga Yoga, our partnership with @trinifoundation is very special & important to me. I love welcoming new Trini Scholarship recipient students into our community and hosting donation classes to support the women’s Recovery Residence.

You may not know that women face unique obstacles when it comes to accessing safe housing and effective recovery resources. Also, they are disproportionately impacted, more likely to face multiple barriers, less likely to seek treatment, and are vastly underfunded in recovery programs. Please join us in making a donation and making a difference.”

“If it wasn’t for community, and a place to call home that was sober and safe, I wouldn’t be celebrating twelve years of recovery in two weeks......I would still be using. I would still be drinking. There’s also a strong chance I wouldn’t be here – because being reckless comes to me naturally, and paired with substances, it’s a deadly combination.....Even with a safe and supportive place to live, the recovery path is hard, hard work. The work that Trini Foundation is doing with Trini Recovery Residence is monumental. To create a place for women early in the sober journey to feel safe in? Supported? Seen? Incredible.

This house is going to change the game for so, so many, and the ways we can help are simple. Spreading awareness. Participating in this challenge. Donating what you can. All of it is important. All of it matters. All of it is going to change lives.”

I felt intense grief, it was like my friend (albeit dysfunctional) died. I realized how much I relied on alcohol to help me relax, celebrate, and cope. With the help of my higher power, sponsor, program, and yoga practice I slowly discovered how to live without alcohol. I now have tools to help me navigate all of life’s experiences alcohol-free and I’m a better person because of it.

This is why I support Trini Foundation and the first Trini Recovery Residence for 5 women in Columbus, OH. Their hope is that it will be the first of many across the nation. In my experience, if it were not for organizations like Trini Foundation, providing safe housing for women in recovery, many women would not be able to have their most basic needs met.

In my personal recovery journey, I would not have been able to achieve long-term sobriety, if it weren’t for sober living homes giving me a safe space to live while working on myself.

Trini Recovery Residence and the 5 women who will live there need our support. Please consider donating today, to help women who need it most.”

See the strong, transformational women who are connected to the Trini Foundation each day of the #soberlivingchallenge too....On day 2 Jess @mojojayjo shared a bit of her story and make sure you watch the whole reel!!!

“I’m Jess and I’m an addict. I just recently celebrated 8 years clean. I work a 12 step program and have a yoga practice that helps me tend to my recovery and growth. I also have the privilege to drive myself to practice at the shala, or I practice in my dedicated space at home. Unfortunately, not everyone has that privilege & the tool of Ashtanga yoga.

The Trini Recovery Residence is important, because it provides a safe, supportive space for women to start their recovery, start working a program, and to learn a yoga practice. By donating today, you can help these women immediately. You can also help by sharing & participating in the challenge.”

See the strong, transformational women who are connected to the Trini Foundation each day of the #soberlivingchallenge too.... @sarahraenelson shared a little of her story for day 1 and I loved this:

“You have to want to live differently. It’s work. No matter how many years of recovery you have under your belt, you have to do the work everyday.......It requires a leap of faith to add yoga to your toolkit beyond conventional “recovery.” But I’ve watched yoga shift lives from hopeless to hopeful. From “broken” to mending. From loveless to full of love.

I’m holding so much hope and gratitude in my heart for @trinifoundation as they open the women’s Recovery Residence in Columbus, OH. Before a woman can evolve her recovery, her basic needs have to be met: food, safe shelter, clothing. That’s exactly what the house provides, a place for grounding, so that women can begin recovery in radical self-love and self-respect.

Asking for help is a radical form of self-love.
Receiving help is a radical form of self-love.
These women need your help.”

Eka pada viparita dandasana x One-legged inverted Eka pada viparita dandasana x

One-legged inverted staff pose is one of the inversions in the advanced A series of ashtanga....All series of ashtanga, primary, intermediate and advanced, include inversions such as Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward dog), urdhva dhanurasana and multiple inverted asanas in the finishing sequence from salamba savangasana (shoulder stand) to sirsasana (headstand).

An asana is considered an inversion if it is performed upside down or when the legs are positioned above the level of the heart. There are a plurality of benefits in inverting the body:

Inversions decrease the gravitational pull on the circulatory system, whilst stimulating other aspects of the system which are more dormant. Venous return, the return of blood to the heart, ordinarily works against the pull of gravity and requires much work. When the body is inverted however, the return of blood to the heart becomes much more effortless;

Inversions also necessitate the cardiovascular system to work harder to send blood through the arteries to reach the feet so the heart is invited to rest and exercise simultaneously;

Inversions drain lymph, old blood and toxins from the lower body and, through reversing the typical pull of gravity, also tone all the organs;

When the body is upside down, Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) flows from the spinal cord to the brain. CSF bathes the brain with nutritious fluid. This increases brain function, prolonged pleasant feeling (Weintraub, 2004) and it is thought to flush out more old CSF (The Minded Institute 2020)
